The Dow Chemical Company, Western Division, Pittsburg, California

A recently developed automatic single fiber tensile tester obtains large amounts of stress-strain data for production control. The instrument tests fibers at a maximum rate of 30-40 hr. and plots stress-strain curves which are corrected for denier (cross- section area), corrected for mounting length errors, and include an indication of the denier of each sample. The elastic niodulus portion is plotted at twice the sensitivity of the balance of the curve. Ease of use is gained through the application of a "drop-in" loading design.
