Variation in the properties of fibers constituting a sample of cotton is one of their most remarkable characteristics. This variation has been studied, in the present paper, on 12 cottons, the fibers having first been sorted into groups based on quartile lengths. It is found that, in gerieral, fiber strength, uniformity of strength, maturity, and reversals per unit length increase with increase in length group, while elongation per unit load decreases. The variation in fineness shows that the extreme length groups are finer than the middle ones. The significance of these findings for elucidating many problems of practical interest is indicated briefly.
