The influence of fiber initial (tensile) modulus on the migratory behavior and physical properties, especially abrasion resistance, of polyester-cotton blends was studied. Nine selected polyesters were blended with combed cotton on the cotton system. For each type of polyester, the polyester/cotton ratio was nominally 50/50, 65/35, and 80/20 by weight. Portions of yarn samples were sectioned and photomicrographs were made. The radial distribution of the blend compo nents have been characterized by a "migration index." It has been found that the initial moduli of component fibers influence the migration of fibers and also the abrasion resistance of fabrics woven from these yarns.

Key Words: Polyester/cotton yarns. Initial tensile moduli • blend composition • fiber physical properties. Radial distribution • migration index • inward migration • outward migration • abrasion resistance. Migration. Yarn spinning • variance analysis.
