Cobalt hydroxide was deposited in cotton yam, followed by treatment with sodium hypochlorite solution. The yam underwent accelerated oxidation in terms of oxygen consumption as well as chemical degradation of the fiber. The normal alkali scour-hypochlorite bleaching of cotton fabric containing traces of cobalt chloride may result in excessive chemical damage of the fibers.

Key Words: Yarn • cobalt chloride • NaOH. Impregnated fibers. Sodium hypochlorite • oxidized cellulose.
