Quality Assurance Directorate (Materials), Royal Arsenal East, London SE18 6TD, UK The phosphorus content of fire-resistant textiles is determined by measurement of the emission intensity at 528 nm of the HPO molecular species, produced by aspiration of an aqueous sample extract into a cool hydrogen-nitrogen diffusion flame. In the case of durable flame-retardant agents, a preliminary fusion of the textile with potassium hydroxide is necessary, followed by an ion-exchange treatment of the extract; non-durable flame-retardants are determined directly, after water extraction of the material and ion-exchange separation.
