Reaction of Wool with Zinc Acetate in Dimethylformamide

Wool gains up to 16% in weight when treated with zinc acetate in hot dimethylformamide and extracted with 2-butanone and ethanol. On the basis of concentration and temperature studies we believe there is internal chemical modification of the wool. Relative uptakes for wool and wool pretreated with succinic anhydride suggest that zinc acetate can react with both amino and carboxyl groups, whereas zinc chloride can react with amino groups only. Treated samples are soft, flexible, and slightly yellowed. The fabric is moderately resistant to attack by carpet beetle larvae.
