An attempt was made to calculate theoretically the solubility parameters ( ) of three anionic dyes from Van Krevelen's molar attraction constants. The solubilities of the dyes in dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethylformamide-trichloroethylene (DMF-TCE) solvent mixtures were related to the values. An attempt was also made to explain the solvent dyeing of water swollen, solvent exchanged cotton with the anionic dyes from DMF-TCE solvent mixtures using the solubility parameter concept. For this purpose, the solubility parameters of the dyes, cotton, and DMF-TCE solvent mixtures were divided into two components, the parameter due to dispersion forces ( d) and the parameter due to association forces ( A). The total picture on the dyeing behavior of cotton from the mixtures using the solubility parameter concept revealed that the dye adsorption was mainly governed by dispersion forces. This was supported by studying the effect of temperature on dye uptake. The absence of temperature effect on dye uptake indicated that the dyeing was mainly governed by dispersion forces.
