Shrink-Resist Efficiency Enhancement of Two Polymers on Wool by Polyamine Pretreatments

I.W. Stapleton

CSIRO Division of Protein Chemistry, Parkville, Melbourne, Victoria, 3052, Australia

Several long-chain diamines and polyamines were compared in their ability to enhance the shrink-resist efficiency of Basolan SW and Synthappret LKF on wool fabric. A detailed study of various factors controlling the effectiveness of polyethy leneimine (Polymin P) showed that pH of the polyamine solution and the temperature of the subsequent fixation were of importance. Attempts to simplify the process by combination of the polyamine with the polymer or by fixing the polyamine and curing the polymer in a single heating step were not successful.
