Relationship Between Residual Catalyst in Finished Cotton and Formaldehyde Release

Robert M. Reinhardt

Southern Regional Research Center,1 New Orleans, Louisiana 70179, U.S.A.

An attempt was made to isolate the influence of residual catalysts on formaldehyde release from finished cotton fabrics. The study was conducted to separate the effects of free formaldehyde and formaldehyde liberated by finish degradation, attributed to hydrolytic action or equilibrium reversal from the presence of catalyst in the finished fabric. Differences were found among finishes in their stabilities to the action of residual catalysts, and among catalysts on a given finish.
