Heat flow through a bed of fibers takes place by conduction through the air and fibers and also by infrared radiation. A proportion of the radiation is absorbed by fibers in its path, and the result is a shading or shadowing effect along the projected path. This paper describes the derivation of heat transfer equations that take this shadowing into account and permit description of the temperature profile through the bed together with the net heat flow rate through the boundary surfaces of the bed.
