Applied Chemistry Division, Indian Jute Industries' Research Association, 17 Taratola Road, Calcutta-700088, India The nature of acidic functionalities associated with raw, demineralized, and sa ponified and demineralized jute fibers, and with a D-xylan derived from the raw fiber were investigated. Neutralization curves for each sample, prepared by plotting pH at different stages of neutralization against the amount of alkali added for a definite weight of the sample, were compared with one another. A technique, involving a diazo coupling reaction with some aromatic amines, was developed for estimating phenolic groups present in the lignin component of the fibers. The results pertaining to these investigations indicated that the free acidity in raw and demineralized jute fibers arises only from the phenolic groups of the lignin component.
