Effect of Area of Growth on Condensed Tannins in Cotton BractsSouthern Regional Research Center, USDA, New Orleans, Louisiana 70179, U.S.A. Bracts of cotton plants (Gossypium hirsutum) of three varieties grown in three states were extracted with 70% acetone. The condensed tannins in the extracts and in extracted and unextracted bracts were hydrolyzed in butanolic HCl, and the types and levels of anthocyanidins produced were compared by TLC and spectroscopy. The area of growth had more of an effect than did the variety on levels of anthocyanidins obtained.
