Jute Technological Research Laboratories, Calcutta 700 040, India The effect of different levels of jute and proplon fiber, caustic concentration, and treatment temperature on the texturization of jute-proplon blended yams is discussed. Initially, the increase in the nonshrink polypropylene component improved yam bulk and breaking extension. The maximum increase was for the 60/40 jute-proplon blend, and further increase in the nonshrink component did not improve this. Caustic concentration and fiber type had a pronounced effect on texturized yam properties: 10% was equally as effective as 18% NaOH solution at 10°C. On texturization, white jute-proplon blended yam showed improved bulk and stretch compared to tossa jute-proplon blended yam. The polypropylene fiber denier also had significant effect on texturized yam properties.
