Magnesium Nitrate, A Neglected Catalyst for Producing Durable Press Fabrics with Low Formaldehyde Release

Magnesium nitrate was compared to magnesium chloride for curing an unmeth ylated DMDHEU for the production of durable press fabrics under mild cure conditions with a minimum of formaldehyde release. The catalysts were used alone, with propanediol, and with the diol plus aluminum dichlorhydroxide. A wide range of catalyst concentrations and curing conditions were used in the study.

Magnesium nitrate produced fabrics with substantially less formaldehyde release and higher wrinkle recovery values than magnesium chloride did when the catalysts were used alone or with the diol plus the aluminum salt, and curing conditions were mild with respect to catalyst concentration, cure time, and cure temperature.
