Tsuruga Plant, Toyobo Petcord Co., Ltd., Tsuruga, Fukui 914 Japan Polyester tire cords were prepared from poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) of dif ferent molecular weights. The relation between the microstructure and heat generation in rubber was investigated through the effect of degree of polymerization, which was one of the major factors controlling both the microstructure and the physical properties. The microstructure of PET tire cord was determined using wide angle x-ray diffraction, small angle x-ray scattering, density, and dynamic viscoelasticity. The heat generation and fatigue properties of PET tire cords in rubber were evaluated by means of the Goodyear tube fatigue test and the Goodrich disk fatigue test. The heat generation property of PET tire cord in rubber was highly related to the mobility of molecular chains in the amorphous regions.
