Preliminary Investigation of the Length Measurement of Cotton Fibers with the Peyer Texlab System: Comparability and Repeatability'USDA, ARS, Cotton Quality Research Station, Clemson, South Carolina 29633, U.S.A.
The short fiber content of raw cotton is important to yarn manufacturers, but current measurement methods are slow and may not accurately characterize short fibers. The Peyer Fibroliner-AL101 system is a relatively easy and rapid method of determining the length-frequency distribution of cotton samples. A comparison between Suter- Webb and Peyer fiber length distributions by weight (barbe) indicates that barbe 25% length is approximately 0.10 inch shorter than Suter-Webb upper quartile length, and the mean length is approximately 0.05 inch shorter than the Suter-Webb mean length. The barbe percent fibers shorter than

inch averaged 1.70% greater than the Suter- Webb percent short fibers. The Peyer Fibroliner-Almeter test can be performed in approximately 15 minutes, while it takes about two hours to make the Suter- Webb test.
