Comparison of Fabric Hand Assessment in the United States and Japan

Hassan M. Behery

College of Commerce and Industry, Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina 29631, U.S.A.

Fabric hand was assessed for 145 fabrics by several methods used in the United States and Japan. A quantitative method using a nozzle, developed in the United States, was tested. Several physical properties related to fabric hand were evaluated using standard procedures. A subjective hand measurement was recorded by a team of experts in the United States to determine the relative hand of these fabrics as com pared to a standard sample. Techniques developed by Kawabata and his group were performed on the same samples in Japan. Correlations between these methods were examined.
