Stresses in Clothing as Related to Seam StrengthDefence Research Establishment Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0Z4, Canada
Defence Research Establishment Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0Z4, Canada This paper summarizes work done to determine the minimum seam strengths re quired for clothing, in particular, Canadian Forces (CF) combat clothing, and to re- validate a recommended 80% seam efficiency. It describes a method to determine where maximum stresses occur in clothing, the locations of these stresses in wear, and the stances that cause these stresses, as well as the stresses incurred while donning and doffing clothing. The maximum stresses in wear and in donning clothing are measured and the results given. A factor of safety is used to arrive at minimum acceptable seam strengths for clothing.
