Clairol Inc., Stamford, Connecticut 06922, U.S.A. Triboelectric charging of hair modified by surface deposition of a series of monomeric and polymeric long alkyl chain quaternary ammonium salts was examined. The length of the hydrophobic alkyl chain in both monomeric and polymeric surfactants, the composition of copolymer-containing surfactant and nonsurfactant units, and the concentration of the treatment solution are the factors determining the sign and mag nitude of generated tribo-charges. The results were interpreted in terms of effective work function of modified fibers dependent upon surface concentration and com position of adsorbed species.
