Wool fibers and fabrics pretreated with an isopropyl alcohol solution of 3-mercap topropyl trimthoxysilane containing various amounts of water have been grafted with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate in an aqueous solution of potassium peroxidisulfate. The Si atoms are evenly distributed in the radial direction of the pretreated fibers with higher water content. But for the fibers pretreated with isopropyl alcohol without water, the Si atoms are localized on the surface of the fibers. The elastic modulus in compression increases in the order: untreated wool < pretreated wool < grafted wool.
