This paper presents a new approach to nep identification and analysis based on image processing methods. A new edge detection method entailing local contrast analysis. which is insensitive to noise, is used to identify neps. The structure of a nep is regarded as consisting of a number of nep elements. Methods for nep element searching, iden tification, and merging are developed. Three nep element distributions are obtained, and these provide detailed information about nep structures. Experimental studies in volve this new technique to investigate the effects of various processing conditions on the incidence of neps in fiber assemblies produced during top manufacture. A com parative study of the new method and the conventional simple threshold method for nep structure identification is also included.
